We know that early success in math leads to later success in life. But in Oakland, only 1 out of 10 Black and Brown students are prepared to do math at grade level.

That’s why The Oakland REACH is growing our Liberator Model to include math in addition to literacy.

We launched literacy tutoring with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) during the pandemic in 2021, and there are now dozens of Literacy Liberators from our communities, in our schools, supporting our students. Our families made it clear the demand was there for math, too. We followed our formula for parent power — ASK. LISTEN. BUILD. LIBERATE. — and got to work building the solution for math.

This August, we officially launched this pilot program called “MathBOOST.” We’re bringing people to the table who know our students the best – parents, family members, and community members — to provide high-dosage math tutoring and be change agents for their own children.

We are ready to free ourselves from the narrative that math education is a weakness for Black and brown families and reclaim math education for our communities. Our math liberator model will make math our power, not our weakness. That’s liberation. That’s power. That’s The Oakland REACH.

Now, let’s get to work — our kids don’t have any more time to wait!
