Launching the REACH Relief Fund
Coming Together for Oakland Families
This is a scary and uncertain time for everyone in Oakland. And for many of our most vulnerable families, it’s not just scary and uncertain — it’s about making the paycheck stretch another day, and surviving another week. While many of us are worried about stockpiling toilet paper and keeping our kids entertained and healthy, many Oakland REACH families are worried about affording rent and paying for food, utilities, and other basic necessities.
During this crisis, we have a huge opportunity to be our best – to come together as a community and show we have each other’s backs. That’s why we are launching the REACH Relief Fund, where you can donate to help make sure Oakland district & charter families have what they need to support their families.
And the great news: We already have our first donor willing to match the first $10,000 in donations.
This fund is focused on getting funds quickly to the most vulnerable families when they need it most. Our priorities include: Families supported by hourly workers who have lost income because of COVID-19 closures; Low-income families whose children qualify for free or reduced school lunch; Families who are housing insecure or at risk of becoming so; and/or undocumented and mixed status families who may not be able to access government programs.
The Oakland REACH already has these existing relationships with the community, and we are able to survey families directly on exactly what they need (not what we think they need). Depending on the amount donated, we expect to provide families up to $550 based on the needs they face in these categories:
- Cleaning and sanitizing supplies
- Gas and transportation to work
- Homeschool or child care supplies and resources
100% of all donations are tax-deductible and will go directly to families to meet basic needs during the pandemic including rent, food and medical care. We will provide regular updates on how your donation is helping families. No part of your donation will be used for administrative costs.
Please help us meet our matching goal of $10,000 and support the REACH Relief Fund today.
